Govt notifies employees state insurance coverage limit to workers

Industrial workers, drawing a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 per month will also be beneficiary of Employees State Insurance (ESI) scheme from May 1, 2010 since government has extended its coverage limit from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month, disclosed the Union Labour and Employment Minister, Mr Mallikarjun Kharge.

Inaugurating ASSOCHAM meet on “Essential labour reforms without tears’, in the Capital, Mr Kharge disclosed that the ministry has already issued a notification to this effect on Monday (26.4.2010).

With this decision, many more thousands of industrial workers will enjoy medical and healthcare benefits extended by ESI corporations throughout the country, clarified the minister adding that it will also yield dividends to their dependents and spouses in case of any casualty as employers would have to pay them medical, disability and sickness benefits as provided under the law.

The decision will come into effect from May 1, 2010 and all employers across the country will have to substantially increase their contributions to ensure that large section of industrial workers are brought to the fold of enhanced ceiling of Rs 15,000 per month, emphasized Mr. Kharge.
